Staying Up to Say Goodbye; Whatever Words #14
That time of year again where my partner must go to war, while I wait at home for their arrival, Black Friday.
To be cute, I decided to stay up to see them off since they were waking up so early. I caught up on my backlog, playing Mouthwashing and Stories Untold, both wonderful games that fit that late night vibes. Both turned out as well as I anticipated...very whelming. The stories for both were better than expected, just some gameplay moments that took me out at times. Mouthwashing devs are some creative people, you can tell by the type of achievements the game has. You get a scanner, that is a UV light, to let your character read secret codes. Early on, you learn a code for a container that you don't get access to until the later half. During the level, you have the opportunity to go back to the code room to learn it again. If you open the container without going back to the code room, you get an achievement. Rewarding players for exploring is always a plus.
Stories Untold was clever with the way it used its episodic level system. The final episode explains how all previous episodes are connected, even in their stand-alone narratives. Every episode starts off with a intro-title-card-sequence, reminiscent of Stranger Things. What I adored in the last episode, was how they cut the intro short, connecting it in-universe as an intro for a TV show; got straight into the plot, while also making a quip one how the player/character has heard that intro sequence so many times already. Breaking the fourth-wall— yet technically not, is always a delight.
Both games have devolopers that have caught my interest and I will be keeping an eye on them going forward.
Mouthwashing - Wrong Organ
Stories Untold - No Code
