Almost Twogether Fourever; A24

So you could say I am an A24 fan—kind of. Currently, I am an A24 member (AAA24), but I canceled the membership that will end early next year. This is a paid membership to get discounts, special offers/promotions, quarterly zine, etc. I used to be a bigger fan until the movie Civil War.

Honestly, I have no interest in the movie. The general premise sounds interesting, but seeing the divide of the country didn’t seem plausible to me. Maybe once the movie came to a streaming service I had, I would give it a watch to try to understand the thought process of the world building. California and Texas together as a team? Ask anyone from Texas and they would laugh. And I mean, FROM Texas, not just living there. I won’t go any deeper than that about the movie itself since I have not seen it, but the main reason this movie became an issue for me are the posters. Specifically, the ones that came out after the movie already released—the AI generated ones. The posters show nothing related to the movie itself, instead, they show the idea of how other major cities could look like in this universe. I have a theory, since the movie was doing well, some higher up executive in the company thought it would be a good idea to make posters of other possible scenarios in the world. Trying to gauge the audience reaction to see if people would be interested if this idea was expanded to multiple movies. Major companies are worried about how new IP (intellectual property) will do, but if it’s a sequel to an already established well received movie, that’s safer. So the day after the new posters came out, I went and canceled my A24 membership. I contemplated, but if my theory is true, I’m not a fan of supporting AI work like this.

~ To be clear, I do not support AI that is trying to take away the jobs of real artists. AI should be used to help people, while not harming others. ~

I’m still a fan of A24 films and I will continue to watch the ones I am interested in, but I am no longer a die-hard fan. Probably won’t buy any more merchandise from them either, which is sad. I have this one pullover fleece that is top half white and bottom half blue, with a small A24 logo on it. One time I got asked if I worked for A24 while wearing it. I exude the vibe of someone into A24 films, but now I am at this crossroad with them. Instead of watching the new movie day one, I now have to wait to see if the company will pull another blunder. Sure I could stop watching all A24 movies completely, but not everyone who made the movie did wrong. The movies can still be watched, but any money that was going straight to the company from merch and membership fees are now over. I don’t want to support something I don’t believe in.
