Creative Outlet
You really do need an outlet to be creative in some way. It doesn't have to be super fancy and extravagant; it can be as simple as this. Just a random place to write out your random thoughts to help put things in perspective. Do I plan to be a self-published writer by doing this? No, but I enjoy writing, and this helps organize the ideas in my head.
I'm running this D&D campaign, and I really thought that maybe I wanted to quit. Some of my players don't take it seriously, well, at least it feels that way to me. This campaign seems to be at the bottom of their lists, even when we have a scheduled date planned a week(s) in advance. After mulling it over and doing some writing, my perspective on the matter shifted. Before, I was trying to create a story with my players to give small ideas and have them lead the way for the story to be and support them. After our last actual session, that's not possible.
I have come to the realization that I have to push and lead the story the way I want. I have to treat this as an already-planned campaign and not a flexible one. To clarify, I have the general plot points for my players, like who the main villain is and the main objective. I was trying to let my players find a way to get there and come up with their own ideas, but they just don't really want to. If they don't have that quest objective going on, they sit around confused, not knowing what to do. I give them the option to explore and go anywhere, and they choose not to or don't know how.
So I've shifted my game plan. I am going to push them in the direction I want. Yes, now this is more planning for me, which I am worried because if my players lose interest and don't show up, then that's extra work for nothing. But that's different now. If they end up choosing not to play, I will still continue to write out my story, and I'll just publish it here when it's completed. I have the general points done; I just have to figure out how we'll hit them. New ideas have come up too since I've started writing.
Sometimes you just need that push to do something creative. It gets overwhelming to think that there has to be a big purpose or goal for everything when, in reality, the purpose can be just for fun.
